139. Week of Easter Sunday - Friday
Their eyes were opened, and they knew Him
Their eyes were opened, and they knew Him.   Luke 24:31
In the afternoon of Easter Day two of the larger circle of disciples went from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus, about three hours' walk. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were blinded so that they should not know Him. And He said to them: "What conversation is this that you have one with another as you walk, and are sad? "And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering, said to Him: "Are You only a stranger in Jerusalem, and have not known the things which have happened there in these past days?" And He said to them: "What things?" And they said to Him: "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and have crucified Him. But we trusted that it would have been He who should have redeemed Israel. And besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. Yes, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, who were early at the sepulchre; and when they did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that He was alive. And certain of them that were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see." Then He said to them: "O fools and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory?" And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. And they drew near to the village where they were going; and He made as though He would have gone further. But they constrained Him saying: "Stay with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." And He went in to stay with them. And it came to pass, as He sat at the meal table with them He took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew Him. And he vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another: "Didn't our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the way, and while He opened to us the Scriptures?"
How? Should anything be added to this beautiful story, which is always new? No, indeed! But always seek your living Saviour in His Word; then your eyes will be opened more and more, and better and more clearly you will know Him, and more and more firmly you will believe in Him.
PRAYER: - Lord God, Heavenly Father, who revealed Your Son Jesus Christ to the two disciples of Emmaus, I pray You also to illumine my heart by Your Word and Holy Spirit that I may grow strong and firm in faith, continuing faithfully, steadfastly in Your Word, gladly speaking of it, and diligently seeking its companionship to the end that here on earth I may have true comfort through Your Word, until, after this life, through Your Son I may be raised to enjoy eternal bliss. Amen.
