18. Third Week in Advent - Wednesday
So David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die.   2 Samuel 12:13
If, like David, penitent and thirsting for mercy, you confess your sin, where, then, is the prophet to forgive you your sin in the name of the Lord, and to make you sure of obtaining life, eternal life? Or where is Jesus Himself to comfort you with forgiveness? - If in the church-service where we have "Confession" you confess your sin before the confessor that is to say, the called minister of the Word, as before God Himself; and if the confessor thereupon pronounces absolution, or forgiveness, to you in the name of the Lord, then this is as valid and certain, in heaven also, as if Christ your dear Lord, dealt with you Himself, and you must never doubt, but firmly believe, that thereby your sins are forgiven before God in heaven. For John writes, chapter 20: The Lord Jesus breathed on His disciples and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Thus the Lord Jesus has given to His disciples the power to remit sins, so that thereby the sins are actually forgiven. His believing disciples exercise this power publicly in their congregations through their called ministers of the Word. Thus in "Confession " Christ, the Lord, is Himself truly present, and by the mouth of His called minister of the Word declares to you the forgiveness of your sins, and assures you of eternal life. O wondrous mercy, wondrous consolation! Open the eyes of faith and see how mercifully near to you your Saviour is. And comfort yourself with this mercy of His.
PRAYER: - Lord Jesus, I, a poor sinner, thirst for mercy, do not give me less than You gave David as regards mercy and consolation. You, even You, my Saviour, through Your minister of the Word, proclaim to me a complete absolution of all my sins. And such mercy, such consolation, I may have as often as I desire it. The river of Your mercy runs forever. For this I give You most hearty thanks. Draw me poor sinner through Your Holy Spirit to come again and again, and to receive grace upon grace from You, my ever-present, gracious, and blessed Saviour. Amen.
