25. Forth Week in Advent - Wednesday
Mary pregnant – “Magnificat”
Blessed is she that believed.   Luke 1:45
In those days, when the angel Gabriel had made the great announcement to Mary, she arose and went with haste from Nazareth, in Galilee, into that city of Judea where Zacharias and Elizabeth lived. And she entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. And it came to pass that, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; and she spoke out with a loud voice and said: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And what is this to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed: for there shall come about all those things which were told her from the Lord." And Mary, also, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and uttered that beautiful psalm, the "Magnificat" which begins with the words: "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God, my Saviour," and which you may read in the Bible. And Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months, then returned to her own house. (Luke 1:39-56)
Oh, I know of no story which breathes such glorious faith as this. Consider! Elizabeth called Mary "the mother of my Lord." She blessed Mary, she blessed the fruit of her womb. She was full of faith and joy in the Saviour. And Mary, in blessed rapture, blessed God, that God who now had become her Saviour - and her child. And even unborn John, as the angel had foretold, was filled with the Holy Spirit in his mother's womb, and saluted his Saviour. What blessed believers! God grant us His Holy Spirit, that we, likewise, may rejoice in the fullness of faith!
PRAYER: - Behold, O faithful God, the pitiful condition of my heart. Indeed, by Your grace I believe in You, my Saviour Jesus Christ. But my poor sinful heart is so barren, quick to grasp earthly, slow to grasp heavenly things. God, Holy Spirit, my only Strength, enliven my faith through Your Word that the divine fire may burn brightly within me so that I may experience heartfelt joy and gladness in my Saviour and great love for Him. Amen.
