46. Week of First Sunday after Epiphany - Wednesday
Jairus’ daughter – “Fear not, only believe”
          Talitha, cumi.   Mark 5:41
Once, when a great multitude crowded about our Lord at the seashore of Capernaum, one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, sought Him. And when he saw Him he fell down at His feet and earnestly implored Him saying: "My little daughter is at the point of death: I pray You, come and lay Your hands upon her, that she may be healed and live." So Jesus went with him with a great multitude following. Now when they approached the house of Jairus, some of his people said to him: "Your daughter is dead why do you trouble the Master any further? But Jesus heard it and said to Jairus: "Fear not, only believe." And He allowed no one to follow any further except Peter, James and his brother John. And He came to the house, and saw the tumult, and those that wept and wailed greatly, and the minstrels that played in a mournful strain. He confronted them, saying: "Why are you making all this fuss, and weeping. The maiden is not dead, but sleeping." They laughed Him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. Jesus put them all out, and took the father and the mother of the maiden and the three disciples, and entered in where the maiden was lying. And He took her by the hand and said to her: "Talitha, cumi" which, in English, is, "Young woman, I say to you, arise". And immediately the maiden arose and walked. She was twelve years old and an only daughter. And they were greatly astonished. Jesus charged them strictly that they should tell no one. And He commanded them to give her food. (Mark 5:21-43.)
In the sight of the Lord Jesus death is a mere sleep, even your death and that of your loved ones. Very easily He can awaken all His own from death to eternal life, and He certainly will do it. Let your dead folk who died in the Lord be at rest, and rejoice that they are sleeping peacefully. Jesus will waken them to eternal life when He comes again. And you, yourself, remain with Jesus, and when death approaches you, then say: You are but a sleep from which my Saviour shall awaken me.
PRAYER: - Lord Jesus Christ, our Saviour who with Your blood cancelled all our sins, and turned bitter death into a peaceful sleep, grant that the tumult of carnal reason and of the scoffers of this world may not prevent me from believing nor confound me, but, rather, that I may lay hold on You in Your Word, and keep You securely in faith and through You be saved forever, for Your name's sake. Amen.
