64. Week of Forth Sunday after Epiphany - Sunday
Rich man and Lazarus
They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.   Luke 16:29
There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and feasted sumptuously every day; and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores; and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table; moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried. And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said: "Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame." But Abraham said: "Son remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that they who would pass from here to you cannot; neither can they pass to us that would come from there." Then he said: "I pray you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house; for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment." Abraham said to him: "They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them." And he said: "No, father Abraham; but if one went to them from the dead, they will repent." And he said to him: "If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though someone rose from the dead." (Luke 16:19-31.)
We sinners must turn to Jesus while we live; then we shall obtain salvation. Whoever does not turn to Jesus will be damned. So that we may turn to Jesus, God has given us the Word of Jesus through which the Holy Spirit operates within us. God does not give us any other means of conversion. Nothing else could convert us. This is most certainly true.
PRAYER: - God, who has given to me the Word of Jesus, have mercy upon me, and grant that I may gladly and properly use this Word and at all times turn to my Saviour in order that I may not be lost, but obtain eternal bliss with all the elect. Help me, help me, O my Lord! Amen.
